Vascular Plants of the Gila Wilderness
Presented in Association with the
Western New Mexico University Department
of Natural Sciences
Riccia nigrella DC.
Family: Ricciaceae
Status: Native
Synonyms:
Euriccia nigrella (DC.) Lacout.
and others
Riccia nigrella is small even by Riccia standards, with the thallus only about 1mm long and less
than that wide. There is a shallow central groove. The scales along the bottom are so dark purple as to appear black along the margin of the thallus. When the thalli are dry, they roll up into black tubes. Many thanks to Barbara Thiers for help confirming the ID of this
specimen.
