Melampodium strigosum Stuessy
(Shaggy Blackfoot)
Family: Asteraceae
Synonyms:
Melampodium coronopifolium Sch. Bip. ex Hemsl.
Melampodium strigosum has yellow ray flowers and yellow disc flowers. When the ray flowers
go to fruit forming a cypsela, the inner phyllaries enclose the cypsela in a structure known as a "perigynium". The perigynia give the inflorescence an odd appearance.
