Houstonia rubra Cav.
(Red Bluets)

Family: Rubiaceae

Status: Native

Synonyms:
Hedyotis rubra (Cav.) A.Gray
Oldenlandia rubra (Cav.) A. Gray

Houstonia rubra is a low herb with distinctive red, pink or white 4-petaled flowers. It is similar to the more common Houstonia wrightii in our area, but the floral tube of Houstonia rubra is much longer (2-3x the length of the petals) than that of Houstonia wrightii (about the same length as the petals or a little longer). The leaves of H. rubra are mostly upright and parallel while those of H. wrightii are spreading. H. rubra is most often found in lower elevation arid areas.
