Bryum flabelliforme D.R. Toren, J.R. Spence & Shevock

Family: Bryaceae

Status: Native

Synonyms:
Bryum renauldii Röll ex Renauld & Cardot
Plagiobryum reynauldii (Röll ex Renauld & Cardot) J.R. Spence

Bryum flabelliforme is a moss found on rocks in streams. It has a golden greenish color. The leaves on the main portion of the stem are rather distantly spaced, but they are more closely imbricate at the apex of the stem. The apex of the leaves is rounded or rounded acute, with the cells at the very apex being shorter than just below. The costa usually ends a few cells short of the apex.
One of the reasons that this species has been reclassified is the nature of the rhizoidal tubers, which become fan-shaped large structures which eventually seem to bud off portions. The tubers become brownish then blackish over time and can be nearly confluent on the surface of the rhizoids.
This species has been called "Plagiobryoides reynauldii" until recently in our area. A study by Toren, Shevock and Spence (Madroño, 2024) has resolved what had been a nagging taxonomic question.

Many thanks to John Atwood, John Brinda, and the Missouri Botanical Garden for loaning us their specimen!
