Brachythecium frigidum (Müll. Hal.) Besch.
Family: Brachytheciaceae
Status: Native
Synonyms:
Hypnum frigidum Müll. Hal.
Brachythecium lamprochryseum Müll. Hal. & Kindb.
Brachythecium frigidum is a large member of the genus that lives near water. It has strongly plicate
stem leaves that frequently have a twisted apex. There is a group of enlarged/mildly to moderately inflated cells
that stretch from the alar region across the base to the costa. The leaf margin is serrulate. The similar Brachythecium rivulare has leaves that have a better triangularly demarcated area of more obviously inflated alar cells, that are not or only slightly plicate, and that are entire or nearly so. Both species are found in and around streams.
